ANSI escape codes in quick docs lack rendering

Currently, the ANSI escape codes in quick docs are included in the text:

ANSI codes are not supposed to be shown. I have never observed them so far.

What is your OS?
Do you have groff installed (which groff)?
If you're on macOS, what does which mandoc print?

I should be able to fix this when I'm able to reproduce it.

The OS producing that behavior is Ubuntu. groff is installed:

$ which groff
/usr/bin/groff

I will check if this happens in my Gentoo installation later as well.

On Gentoo, the effect is different. For built-ins, the quick docs render properly without ANSI escape codes. I also confirmed that it worked the same on Ubuntu (no ANSI codes for builtins there, too).

For other commands, unlike on Ubuntu, the docs are unreadable:
