There is a typo in the second sentence after equation 5.2, in chapter 5. At the end of the sentence there should be a list of covariates. So,.my guess is that where it is written:
"At first it may seem that Expression {eq}eq:polynomial_reg is representing a multiple linear regression of the covariates $X, X^2 \cdots + X^m$."
It should be
"At first it may seem that Expression {eq}eq:polynomial_reg is representing a multiple linear regression of the covariates $X, X^2, \ldots, X^m$."
