What Problem Does This Solve?

Step 5 of the Pre-Workshop Setup Guide urges us to install Git before installing VS Code. What is the appropriate guidance for those of us who already have VS Code installed independent of this workshop and do not wish to reinstall it? Can we go ahead and install Git, and are there extra steps we then need to take in VS Code? Thanks for any advice.

I considered just installing Git and seeing what happens, but would prefer guidance before I do so. The option of removing and reinstalling VS Code is not appealing.

I agree that further clarification would come in handy. On the Mac the situation is further complicated because the user may not know whether they have Git installed or not and which version they may or may not have.

Thanks for raising this @id2025anc -- great question. Fixed in commit 2151f4c on main.

The setup guide now includes a note for users who already have VS Code installed:

Already have VS Code installed? No problem -- you do not need to reinstall it. Just install Git using the instructions below, then restart VS Code. VS Code detects Git automatically on startup, so after a restart, the Source Control panel and all git commands in the terminal will work immediately. No extra configuration is needed.

Short version: Install Git, restart VS Code, done.
