Crashing on idle #2

Description

Sony Z1 Compact, UK, on Vodafone with LTE. Running CM11 nightlies since I got the phone around Easter 2014. Updated to the latest CM11 nightly this morning, behaviour still occurs.

Basically, the phone crashes reliably if it goes "too" idle. Examples of ways to avoid it going "too" idle are:

  1. Keep it charging all the time; interestingly, this only works if charging via usb connector (though it could equally be related to having it connected to a computer and thus the file systems mounted) - certainly it will still crash if just charging through the cradle.
  2. Have Wifi turned on, but don't connect it to any networks - presumably the constant scanning is enough to stop it idling too much.
  3. Use it constantly

When it crashes, it'll be idle and normally the screen is off. Sometimes it will just freeze with the screen on, but that's rarer. In these cases, you can sometimes get to the power menu, and sometimes it will allow you to hit reboot - often it fully freezes before you get to this point. But even if you do get to the reboot option, it'll then just sit there spinning on "rebooting device" and never makes any progress. When it crashes it never recovers - a full reset is the only course of action available.
