The extent of documentation in 3pg seems to be a README and some release notes. This makes it difficult for new developers to quickly pick-up the codebase. Adding comments to relevant components would be helpful, but any assumptions of use/purpose need to be run past people familiar with 3pg source code. Adding codeblocks and generating documentation (Doxygen) might also be useful?
