Rework Discrete Variable Handling #54

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Currently, only continuous variables are supported as inputs. The old discrete inputs was removed because it was too limiting (integers only). We need a general way to handle discrete inputs in addition to the options system.
Describe the solution you'd like
It may be possible to adapt the same mechanics as the options system for use as discrete inputs.
