I'll be posting suggested tasks here for potential applicants to try during the contribution period.

Please note that this project will require some good previous experience in Python and ML. There are fewer open issues which are "low hanging fruit", mainly due to 2 very successful Outreachy rounds in 2022!

@sanjayankur31 and @pgleeson I tried to run all tests and all examples on vs code but it returns errors. Do I need to use powershell wsl --install to install Linux and Ubuntu on windows 10? Please am stuck! I need a solution.

I have installed the Microsoft visual studio build tools and ran it again yet am still getting the same error. Please @pgleeson and @sanjayankur31 I will appreciate your help.

The issue here is that it cannot find a header file required to compile fastkde: io.h. So this is missing from your Python installation.

How have you installed Python etc? (I don't use VSCode or Windows, so I need more information to be able to help here)

@sanjayankur31 I did the normal installation and it installed completely. Should I uninstall my python and then install it back? Or is there anything I need to do to fix it. I have also tried to run it on the ubuntu terminal yet it's still returning an error.

Is the error on Ubuntu the same? On Ubuntu, you'll need the python3-dev package I guess.

This is the error with the python version because I got the same you can try is first download the required python version and then make a virtual env with that python.exe and install all the necessary things.

Secondly, please how do I run all examples. There are many subfolders in that example folder. Do I need to run them one after the other? Please I need clarification @sanjayankur31

I have updated and cleaned my PR URL. I have cleaned the repo and made changes in some submission files. As @pgleeson sir I have added a condition and a time derivative function. I would have cleared my PR earlier but I got a fever the previous week now I am fine and will contribute to the best.

Thanks to all of you for your contributions so far! It's great to see so much interest in the ModECI MDF project!

A few tips/points for going forward.

• Make sure your examples for your contributions are unique. Don't base them off of other contributors' examples.
• Do not use ChatGPT or other systems to automatically generate code or text/documentation for pull requests. We want you to create changes the "old fashioned" way for now!
• No one here is "sir", that level of formality is not usual in open source projects...
• Keep pull requests clean and focussed on just what you have newly developed, i.e. not including regenerated but irrelevant files from elsewhere in the repository, and notebooks/scripts which load in data from remote resources as opposed to committing all files for training models, etc.
• Make sure you have pulled in the latest code from our development branch, have run your examples with this version installed and the PRs are pointing to our development branch.

Hi all, just to clarify:

• If you have used any code from another repository, from a fork of MDF or have even based your examples on a tutorial in Machine Learning from elsewhere, please state this explicitly at the start of your notebook/script, pointing to precisely where the original code/example was obtained. It needs to be clear too what your contribution is beyond the existing code.

• If you have used ChatGPT etc to generate any code or documentation, also state this explicitly at the start of your code, or even better, don't include this in your contributions. Use of AI generated code and documentation is evolving fast and this may be standard practice in a few years, but for now, we want to know what you can come up with yourself, reflecting your understanding of the current codebase.

That shouldn't happen. Can you please check that you installed Cython in the same virtual environment you were getting the error in? Does pip freeze list Cython?

Hi all, when you are adding your contributions to your Outreachy application, they will ask you whether your contributions are merged. As we've been asking people to make pull requests with their examples to the development branch, we're not planning to merge all of these.

Therefore it will not be a problem for your contributions not to be merged to the man repo. Just point to each folder or notebook in your branch which is used in the PR, which contains each of the tasks you have completed as part of your contributions.

@Rishikesh233 It would be easier to debug if you committed the code and pointed to the version of the notebook that was failing.

@Rishikesh233 I would recommend making the mdf model simpler and trying to run it and then debugging at the first instance when something throws an error. It looks like you are putting in a string when it expects an array or tensor.
Also, there are over 2000 files in your PR. The notebooks should download the required training/testing data ideally as opposed to putting it all in the PR.

It has been really amazing to see so many new people using MDF in notebooks without too many installation/usability issues for the package itself. Please make sure to record all of your contributions in your applications to Outreachy. You can still edit your contributions up to the application deadline, but unfortunately from now on there will not be much time for feedback on any new changes.

There has been much more interest than we expected, and we will have a difficult time selecting the best candidate(s) for the project. This means that many of you who have spent time on these tasks will be disappointed, which is very unfortunate. We hope nonetheless you will have had a valuable experience from interacting with us and the other contributors along the way, and have learned some practical skills about contributing to open source projects.

Be clear about what other time commitments you will have over the internship period. Read the requirements carefully and make sure you comply with Outreachy's policies on this. It is not unknown that applicants could be ruled out at this stage (e.g. if you have full time education or work commitments).

For the final application, we are asked to create a project timeline with our mentors.
Pls, what steps are we to take?

The timeline is for the applicant to define what tasks they will accomplish during the project, broken down into approx 2 week intervals. We won't specify exactly what should be put here, rather would be good to see what each applicant comes up with here themselves, based on their understanding of what needs to be done in the project. Doesn't have to be very detailed, it will just give us an impression of how you plan to manage your time, and what steps you think are important to achieve the goals of the project.
