Goals

Further strengthen a coherent and reliable setup experience by guiding users along the way

Vision

We envision a coherent and reliable setup experience by

1. Introducing an optional setup assistant
2. Revising the code based setup flow
3. Including sensible and contextual information stemming from a trusted device database

Scope & Boundaries

In Scope:

• Device setup flow (discovery and manually triggered)
• 1-2 device classes for establish a foundation to iterate on further going forward

Out of Scope:

• Interactions once devices are setup
• Automations

Plan

Epic 1: Personas & Intents research

• We aim to have a sound understanding of our users’ expectations on unifying the setup experience
• the following research tasks are related (currently on hold):
• we analyze data on why people initially started using smart home technology (understanding their motivations and purposes) - here's the equivalent research task
  
• understanding if "outgrowing - that people leave other ecosystems and brands and migrate to Home Assistant" is the reality of starting out with Home Assistant for many users
• and describing smart home users
  

Epic 2: Setup Assistant (“Agentic approach”)

• We aim to offer an (optional) setup assistant to guide users through their device setup flow, independent of how the setup process was started (e.g. discovery, scanning a code, manually starting the setup wizard, swapping devices…)
• Focusing on 1-2 device classes for a start to iterate on further going forward

Epic 3: Code based setup flow

• We aim to further leverage that from a device setup perspective in addition to the other means already offered (e.g. discovery)

Epic 4: Device database integration

• We aim to incorporate the device database into the setup process by leveraging sensical and contextual information
