more robust plotting functions

Assuming for now that filtering of categories is still happening in loadTraces():

1. plot all categories in tier 'cons' as separate lines:

rawTraces <- loadTraces("../palatals/", 'cons')
# or
rawTraces <- loadTraces("../palatals/", tiername='cons')

2. plot all 'ɫ' and 'n' from any teir:

rawTraces <- loadTraces("../palatals/", "", c('ɫ', 'n'))
# or
rawTraces <- loadTraces("../palatals/", tiername="", categories=c('ɫ', 'n'))

3. plot just ɫ and n categories in tier 'cons':

rawTraces <- loadTraces("../palatals/", 'cons', c('ɫ', 'n'))

• specifying tiername as a list, e.g. tiername=c('cons'), is okay too
• specifying categories as a list of a list, e.g. categories=list(c('ɫ', 'n')), is okay too

4. plot all categories in tier 'cons' as single line:

rawTraces <- loadTraces("../palatals/", 'cons', "")
# or
rawTraces <- loadTraces("../palatals/", tiername='cons', mergecategories=TRUE)

5. plot just ɫ and n categories from tier 'cons' (explicit specification of tier for both categories):

6. plot ɫ and n in tier 'cons' together as one line and lʲ and nʲ in teir 'cons' together as another line

• determine how many elements/plotted lines based on contents of categories
• convert single string to list (repeating if needed)

• tiername accepts a string, or a list;
  • if a string, it assumes same tier name for all categories
  • if a list, it should be the same length as the list of categories;
  • if empty, data from all tiers is used to match specified categories
• layer accepts a string, or a list;
  • if a string, it assumes the same layer for all categories;
  • if a list, it should be the same length as the list of categories;
  • if empty, data from all layers is used to match specified categories
• categories accepts a list of individual categories to plot, or a list of lists;
  • if a list is an element of categories, then either:
    • all categories in that list are plotted together as if they were a single category if the corresponding index of mergecategories is TRUE; or
    • if the corresponding index of mergecategories is FALSE (or unspecified), then this is just a mechanism to allow using a single tier+layer combination for several categories
  • if not specified, all traces matching non-empty intervals in specified (or all if unspecified) tiers are plotted and assigned to categories based on tier labels
  • if empty ('', including as a list element), all traces (matching layer if specified; otherwise all layers) are plotted together as a single category
