Loco AI not using brakes to keep speed limits ?

I tried the Loco AI on a route between Steel Mill (SM) and Harbor & Town (HB) on my initial DE2. At some place the train got way too fast an derailed. So I guess it does not use brakes to control the speed ? Unfortunately I was
just AFK for a few minutes when this happened so I did not see it happening. I only came at the very moment the train left the track already.
