The spatial_extent parameter is used to select all inputs that touch the spatial extent, whereas the aoi parameter of force_level2 determines the area that is actually processed by FORCE. The two parameters have a distinct meaning, however, the aoi parameter is not mentioned explicitly in the documentation at all.
