[P14] A-6 — Merge Phase 14 Branch to `develop` + Version Bump to v0.5.8

Background

Phase 14 (phase/14-eval-optimization) closes once all Elo-positive changes have cleared SPRT and been accumulated on the branch. This issue is the merge gate.

Pre-Merge Checklist

SPRT verdicts — must be recorded and acted on:

• A-1 king-safety verdict recorded (H1 applied or H0 documented)
• A-2 mobility verdict recorded (H1 applied or H0 documented)

Phase 14 pre-merge gate complete. Summary of what's been verified and pushed (phase/14-eval-optimization @ 3c0c269):

SPRT verdicts — all recorded and acted on:

• A-1 king-safety ([P14] A-1 — King Safety Group Tuning (B-1 carry-forward) + SPRT #170): closed, inconclusive/deferred to Phase 15 (corpus coverage gap for bishop/queen king-zone attackers)
• A-2 mobility ([P14] A-2 — Mobility Group Tuning (B-3 carry-forward) + SPRT #171): closed, inconclusive/deferred (val MSE regression despite clean Fisher coverage; LR-overshoot hypothesis tested and falsified)
• A-3 pawn-structure ([P14] A-3 — Pawn Structure Group Tuning (B-2 carry-forward) + SPRT or Formal Deferral #172): closed, deferred (same val-MSE-regression pattern, clean coverage, ruling out corpus starvation)
• A-4 aspiration window ([P14] A-4 — Aspiration Window Delta SPRT (C-1 carry-forward: 25 / 40 / 75 cp) #173): closed, H1 applied — delta 50→25cp, +156.2 Elo (185 games, LOS 100%). The phase's one confirmed strength gain.
• A-5 contempt ([P14] A-5 — Contemplation / Repetition Draw Contempt (Carry-forward from #125 / #138) #174): closed, H0 — isolated SPRT (871 games, TC 60+0.6) showed −16.8 ±16.8 Elo, LOS 2.5%. Contempt UCI default reverted 50→0; infrastructure kept for opponent-specific/CLOP tuning.

Quality gates:

• engine-core: 177 run, 0 failures, 2 skipped ✅
• engine-tuner: 131 run, 0 failures, 1 skipped ✅
• NPS: this checklist's original floor (228,490, "Phase 13 measured 240,516") is stale — it's from the retired BenchMain protocol. Phase 14 uses BenchRunner (31-pos/depth-13); that baseline was itself found stale mid-phase (accumulated eval changes shifted node count 101,771,086 → 77,265,370, ~24%) and re-established on native Windows 2026-07-02: 328,623 NPS ±6,286, new gate floor 312,192 NPS. Current HEAD satisfies this by construction (it is the baseline run). See dev-entries/phase-14.md, "NPS Baseline Re-Established" entry.
• Net Elo gain: satisfied via A-4 (+156.2 Elo H1).

What's still open on the Acceptance Criteria list below (intentionally, not an oversight): clean CI on develop, the 0.5.8-SNAPSHOT version bump, and the v0.5.7 tag are all post-merge/release.yml outputs — they can't be true until the merge actually happens, so they stay unchecked until then.

• Merged via PR Phase 14: Eval Optimization #184 (phase/14-eval-optimization → develop, merge commit 30f8a78), matching prior-phase merge convention.
• Backend CI run #179 green on develop post-merge (build/test, search regression suite, NPS benchmark gate all passed).
• release.yml run 28872219846 completed successfully: version set to 0.5.7, built/tested/packaged, tagged v0.5.7, develop bumped to 0.5.8-SNAPSHOT, commits+tag pushed.
• Release published: https://github.com/coeusyk/chess-engine/releases/tag/v0.5.7 (fat JAR engine-uci-0.5.7.jar attached, not draft/prerelease).
