autoremove (--rm) does not work on stop

Why none of these examples autoremove the containers even with the - - rm flag?

If I run the containers my self with the same flags it does works. But when it runs with fleet/systemd the docker stop in ExecStop doesn't remove the container

I think the issue has to do with systemd. Here is an small repro.

Example unit:

[Unit]
Description=Example 1.0.0
After=docker.service

[Service]
TimeoutStartSec=0
ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/docker pull nginx
ExecStart=/bin/bash -c '/usr/bin/docker start example || /usr/bin/docker run --rm --name example -p 8085:80 nginx'
ExecStop=/bin/bash -c '/usr/bin/docker stop example'

[X-Fleet]
X-Conflicts=example-v1.0.0-*.service

Then run this:

$ fleetctl start example.service
$ fleetctl stop example.service
$ fleetctl ssh <machine> docker ps -a

As you can see the container is still there, even if we used the option --rm.

Now add the KillMode=none option to the unit:

[Unit]
Description=Example 1.0.0
After=docker.service

[Service]
TimeoutStartSec=0
KillMode=none
ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/docker pull nginx
ExecStart=/bin/bash -c '/usr/bin/docker start example || /usr/bin/docker run --rm --name example -p 8085:80 nginx'
ExecStop=/bin/bash -c '/usr/bin/docker stop example'

[X-Fleet]
X-Conflicts=example-v1.0.0-*.service
