Missing icon in media notification (GNOME)

The Spotify media notification is missing an icon and showing the placeholder instead.

Version:

OS: Fedora 42

Interestingly the notification for a new song does use the icon.

I think this is because Spotify sends the track change notification, but the player controls are MPris integration. They're system-native rather than Spotify's.

Here's Mousai (flatpak) and Firefox (native package):

We can't easily change the icon name there.

1. open terminal
2. type:

sudo touch /var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications/spotify.desktop

3. add the following inside spotify.desktop:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Spotify
GenericName=Music Player
Icon=com.spotify.Client
Exec=/usr/bin/flatpak run --branch=stable --arch=x86_64 --command=spotify --file-forwarding com.spotify.Client @@u %U @@
NoDisplay=true

4. save changes

However as far as i know also the verified and supported snap version of spotify does not come with the icon in the media notifcation so I think it's a spotify's fault.

It seems that you're showing the regular .desktop file, so in addition you need to create additional file with configuration I provided above

Yep, you need also to specify an exec parameter.
(copy it from the .desktop file)
For spotify it may work but for example flatpak firefox it is broken with this solution

if Spotify implements this, then a proper implementation is easy
