It's been a while since I poked this, but here's a sample schematic using an Arduino Uno that should work:

In this example, handshakePin_In is 5 and handshakePin_Out is 4.
Connect the lens pins according to the F-mount pinout.
Be sure to run the Arduino at 5V, not 3.3V. The Nikon lens interface is 5V.

Awesome. Thanks for this. I'm a lot better with code than electronics. Im looking to query zoom position and maybe be control the focus motor. When you were poking around with this, did you manage to control the focus position?

Sorry for the long delay - I finally found some time to dig up my old notes.
This Nikon Hacker thread has some info, but it's spread throughout.

Here's a machine-parseable listing of all the commands I discovered while working on this:

The listing feeds a parser I wrote long ago to analyze tons of data captures between different lenses and bodies.

I know it's been a while since the last update on this but maybe you could still help me.
I am looking for the command to change the aperture. Did you manage to find a command for this?
