I believe I've found the bug causing my months of stress and frustration.
Problem:
There seemed to be no consistency of alignment of the docking port and the camera working in the proper sense i.e. up = up.
Hypothesis:
In order to correctly align the docking camera to the command module (so up is up etc) then for the JUNIOR docking clamp, you have to have the yellow alignment arrows pointing DOWN (with respect to cockpit seating), but for the REGULAR SIZED DOCKING CLAMP, you have to have the yellow alignment arrows pointing UP (i.e. aligned with cockpit seating).
