Use Flexbox for grid system

Using Flexbox system (although losing IE9 support, but that shouldn't be a problem now), you can have a grid system without the "col" attributes.  I would think you can continue to have the col attribute in order to set the grid when you need to as well as something like "narrow" or "wide" to address some specific Flexbox stuff.

Just a thought to go even more minimal...
