So far I've tried

• heroku: Slow startup time, but then quite fast. We have too many DB entries for the 'free' set (i. e. it works. but does not allow inserts anymore). Would cost 9$ / month
• raspberry pi: not always online, quite slow for short queries (searching for mat takes 20 seconds).

Any other options?

It really runs on my potato raspberry pi somewhat acceptibly after tweaking the requests of the datatables gem further (disallow short requests, only request once after user has stopped typing). I'm right now throwing together capistrano recipies for easy deployment. First time I've done that, it's quite cool!
