Thanks for putting this together. It's helping me down the de-googling path.
I thought I'd try this after using it successfully under Linux, so I installed WSL (Debian) and all the dependencies.
The backup-windows.ps1 starts (blank powershell window opens) and closes almost immediately without displaying errors or anything.
The backup.sh script runs in the WSL bash but doesn't connect to the phone (I imagine it's not meant to be used under WSL but it should be clarified in the readme).
I get the same behavior using 2 different phones (Pixel 7a and MotoG Stylus).

Any ideas?

I found the solution to my own issue. To run backup.sh within WSL it first must have access to USB devices.
This is explained here.

• install usbipd in Windows (winget install usbipd)
• enter the PowerShell commands listed in steps 1-3 of the article (I also had to do a usbipd bind --busid X-X as administrator, where X-X is the USB bus ID of the Android phone)
• run backup.sh and follow the prompts. The phone should be accessible.

The purpose of the backup-windows.ps1 script is to set up the WSL environment, so these steps could be included in that script.

Hi. I'm sorry for not looking into this issue earlier, I was busy in real life.

This is most probably because you might've skipped the "Powershell Developer Settings" step of the usage instructions (see README). PowerShell script execution is heavily locked down by default, so a Windows setting has to be changed before backup-windows.ps1 can be run.

To run backup.sh within WSL it first must have access to USB devices.

Nice job for figuring out that workaround, it looks interesting. backup-windows.ps1 uses a different approach; it uses WSL's OS integration to run the Windows adb.exe, which correctly recognizes USB devices.

Did enable the setting as mentioned.

Hi @piyu-sh, thanks for reaching out.

The script requires Ubuntu or Debian to be installed in WSL, and that distro has to be the default one. Enabling the sudo command on Windows didn't fix your problem because the script's trying to run sudo inside WSL.

What does it say when you run wsl --list in a terminal? If you can see Ubuntu or Debian there, set it as the default using wsl --set-default <Distro_Name>. If not, install with wsl --install Ubuntu (or Debian).

Do you mind updating that in the windows installation guide ? I think it mentions about setting default in 1st step external link but for those like me who already had wsl distro installed might not open that link.
