Build a VS Code extension that brings OpenMetadata context into the IDE. When a developer is writing SQL or working with dbt models, the extension shows:

• Table descriptions, column types, and tags from OpenMetadata
• Lineage information (upstream/downstream) for the entity being referenced
• Data quality status and recent test results
• Owner information and links to the OpenMetadata UI

I’d love to work on this for the hackathon.

I’m planning to build a VS Code extension using TypeScript and the OpenMetadata REST APIs to surface metadata directly within the editor. My approach is to implement hover tooltips for table and column details (descriptions, types, tags), along with a sidebar panel to display lineage (upstream/downstream), data quality status, and quick links to the OpenMetadata UI.

I have experience in React, Node.js, and building REST-based applications, and I can start immediately to deliver a functional MVP within the hackathon timeline.

I can also explore caching metadata responses to improve performance and provide a smoother developer experience.

Happy to take ownership or collaborate if needed. Please let me know if I can proceed.

Features

• Hover tooltips: description, owner, tier, tags, columns with data types
• Lineage: upstream and downstream tables shown inline
• Data Quality: DQ test results without opening the browser
• Search: Ctrl+Shift+P → OpenMetadata: Search Tables
• SQL alias resolution
  -Smart caching: stale-while-revalidate pattern, prefetch on cursor move

Technical Highlights

• Stale-while-revalidate cache: fresh (1 min) and stale (5 min) tiers
• Request deduplication: same table hovered twice = one API call
• Dead state tracking: failed lookups never retried, no API spam
• Predictive prefetching: data ready before you even hover
• SQL alias parser: resolves aliases to full FQNs before API lookup
• 5 second timeout on all API calls: editor never hangs
