Is there a way to disable Phoenix Pro

You can switch to Highlight mode that matches the previous behavior if you don't want switching play and edit modes.

You can disable auto update with file > Open Preferences File, add to end of json:

"autoUpdate": false,

The forced update to Pro and with no way to 'un-Pro' it was really not appreciated.

The "Lifetime deal" seems like false advertising as well :-(

Reverted to prior version and auto updates are now off. Might not be the result they were after (it's just not used enough to justify the cost)

Just to clarify our side a bit for everyone reading: Phoenix Code has been free and open source for over a 5 years now. We’re not a company backed by investors or a large corporation - it’s a very small, full-time indie team trying to keep the project alive.

Over the last few years we tried really hard to make community funding work. Open Collective, Github donations, everything - but it just wasn’t enough to pay salaries and keep development going. We reached a point where we either walk away from the project, or find a sustainable path forward. There wasn’t a clean third option.

That’s why Phoenix Pro exists. It’s optional, and everything people have used for years - including Live Preview - remains free. Pro currently adds just one feature (Live Preview Edit) as a way for users who find value in Phoenix Code to help keep the project moving.

And to be clear: there’s no hidden agenda here - no VC pressure or big business decisions. It’s literally just a small team trying to pay salaries, keep the servers running, and keep the lights on so Phoenix Code doesn’t die.

If reverting to an older version works better for you right now, that’s totally okay. We’re grateful Phoenix Code was useful at all, and we hope we can earn back trust over time through clarity and improvements. We didn’t take anything away. No existing features were moved to Pro. We’ve actually added a lot to the free edition, and Pro is just an optional extra to help fund the work - which can be disabled with a single click as noted above.
