This app has –in my usage– created a new kind of problem for itself. I had an initial use case and reviewed several apps for suitability. I specifically wanted to setup scan settings, save locations, and such ahead of time for a specific purpose (scanning receipts to separate image files on the go and having them saved in a specific sync directory to be directly imported into acceptarium).
FairScan works brilliantly for that. Once the export settings are configured, I can fire up the app, scan one or many receipts, and export them with a minimum of fuss.
And now I have a new problem. It works so well I want to adapt other things to use a similar workflow. For example I'd like to be able to take scans of things on the go and have them saved to PDF and exported to a different sync directory that becomes a print queue. I don't want these scans mixed up with my other workflow, and changing the settings back and forth depending on what I'm doing is quite obnoxious.
One idea would be to add some sort of "profiles" feature to the app with an option on the first scan page to switch profiles before scanning. But that seems to be like it will lead down the road to clutter.
Another idea and the one I'd currently propose is some way to have a custom launcher that fired up the app with specific intents that override the default settings. Even if there was not a nice ergonomic way to create them, if there was a technical possibility to create launch shortcuts for each use case:
- "Launch FairScan and override the scan type to PDF and set the output directory to /path/to/print_queue"
- "Launch FairScan and override the scan type to JGEG and set the output directory to /path/to/receipt_vault"
Then once I launch the app I can just right into the correct workflow for the purpose.
Does Android have any mechanism that could be used for something like this?
