Align internal and public app versioning using semantic versioning

### The feature request

The app has an internal build version number (e.g. 1.0.8978.16678) that differs from the public version (e.g. v1.0.9). It would be good to align these and adopt a clearer versioning format.

### Proposed solution

Adopt a consistent `major.minor.patch` versioning format based on semantic versioning
