How to focus on building a real local community #5

Building a real local community is the hardest and most important part of a Local Exchange Trading System (LETS). Technology alone will not make it succeed. The system must create real trading between real people.

1️⃣ Start With One Small Community (20–30 People)

Do not start with 100 users immediately.

Start with:

20–30 active people

Why?

Because trading needs trust and familiarity.

Good starting communities could be:

  • A neighbourhood

  • A college student group

  • A freelancer community

  • A religious community

  • A village

  • A housing society

Example:

Exchange: Kochi LETS
Members: 25 people

If these people know each other, the system works much better.

2️⃣ Ensure Essential Skills Exist

A healthy LETS economy needs diverse skills.

Example:

Person Service
A Cooking
B Electrical repair
C Math tutoring
D Graphic design
E Vegetable farming
F House cleaning

If everyone is a software developer, the system dies.

Try to recruit people with different services.

3️⃣ Require Each User to List 3 Offerings

When a user joins the exchange, require:

List 3 things you can offer

Example:

• Computer repair
• English tutoring
• Grocery delivery

This ensures the marketplace is not empty.

4️⃣ Organize a First Trading Event

Most LETS systems fail because people don't start trading.

So organize a first exchange event.

Example:

Local Exchange Meetup

People introduce themselves and say:

"I can teach math"
"I repair bikes"
"I sell vegetables"

Then they start trading.

This creates momentum.

5️⃣ App Should Feel Like a Marketplace

Your app should show:

New offerings
Recent trades
Top contributors

Example UI:

Recent Trade:
Alice → Bob : 10 credits (vegetables)

New Offer:
Charlie - Guitar lessons

This makes the community feel alive.

6️⃣ Choose an Exchange Moderator

Each exchange should have:

1 community leader

Responsibilities:

  • approve new users

  • solve disputes

  • encourage trading

  • remove inactive users

Without moderation, LETS systems collapse quickly.

7️⃣ Make It Social (Not Just Economic)

People trade more when there is social interaction.

Examples:

  • Monthly meetup

  • Telegram/WhatsApp group

  • Local events

The system should feel like a community network, not just a payment system.

🔑 Realistic Path to Success

A good realistic path:

Step 1: 25 users
Step 2: 100 users in one exchange
Step 3: 5 exchanges
Step 4: 500 users total

At this stage your project becomes very interesting.
