I have just now come across the issue where the latest tag surprised me a bit. That being it following the development branch and therefore being unstable in a sense (a bug that I'm filing separately).
Having a tag that always follows the latest development is super useful. But I'd like to have a more stable option. Something that only ever follows releases. And such a tag is missing.

Following the latest tag might bring unexpected changes and bugs that do happen in development

Personally I think you should use latest for that and instead offer a dev tag that follows dev. Alternatively keep latest as is and offer a stable tag.

Which version of testssl.sh are you referring to?

Not sure what you mean by "such a tag is missing" this is the point of the PR.

• some wanted a snapshot of the latest and greatest.
• dev version is not really unstable at this point of the snapshot release. The tag is only for release. After release the banner will be renamed to 3.3dev again.
• I can't change tags for future releases of 3.2 as this will confuse definitely more folks.

What I was initially thinking of was naming the tag, release and banner within testssl.sh 3.3dev-snapshot-YYMM . I just omitted "dev" because the string appeared unhandy and the banner would need a change. Also the odd minor number signals already this is dev The morning after recap though says it would be clearer. Don't know whether that addresses your concern?

Again having latest point at the dev version is fine, but I'm missing a static tag that points at the latest release regardless of version.

Say 3.3 releases, then the tag 3.2 will not give me that version. latest will then be pointing at the 3.4dev.

So I'm really just missing a tag that always follows the latest release.

3.3dev will finally be released as 3.4.0. By that time 3.2 will be obsolete. Development continues in 3.5dev then.

There is no single tag for tracking releases, just branches which have a numbering scheme related to the branches.

That's correct. And that's specifically the reason I'm requesting such a Docker tag be created

For the docker hub image I can't change anything. Probably because I moved this repo from my personal to a organizational account. For the existing tags though it's not a problem as the seem to follow the redirects. For edits amendments though I get the following warning.

So for docker hub there's no 3.3dev. I need to move this to my account testssl/testssl @ docker hub (and loose the number of pulls). Don't know whether I'll be charged then.

The quality of engineering is not adequate to the money I spent each year. I get the message above even when I want to remove tags of old branches or test branches I created a longer while back. This is just stupid.

Ah I didn't even know it was on docker hub. I've been pulling from GitHub the entire time.

And I very much can understand your frustration. Docker hub has become a flaming heap of garbage
