Installation of the plugin

I am still new to phonegap and I have tried several different ways to install the plugin, and none of the work, could give me some more detailed advice on how to install it.

I found this stackoverflow answer for installing cordova plugins.

I tried:

From Cordova plugin registry

cordova plugin add ch.ti8m.documenthandler

Error: Registry returned 404 for GET on https://registry.npmjs.org/ch.ti8m.documenthandler

I guess this plugin is not published to npm

From local storage

cordova plugin add ~/Developer/DocumentHandler/

Error: Invalid Plugin! /Users/nickgraham/Developer/DocumentHandler needs a valid package.json

This plugin doesn't have any package.json, but I'm not sure how to create one.

From remote repository

cordova plugin add https://github.com/ti8m/DocumentHandler
cordova plugin add https://github.com/ti8m/DocumentHandler.git

Error: Failed to fetch plugin https://github.com/ti8m/DocumentHandler.git via registry.
Probably this is either a connection problem, or plugin spec is incorrect.
Check your connection and plugin name/version/URL.

Maybe the plugin.xml is messed up.

If you clone the repo with the package.json, you can add the plugin to your project with cordova plugin add <path_to_local_repo>

First let me warn you that this plugin looks strongly unmainted.
To get the project on your local filesystem:

git clone https://github.com/ti8m/DocumentHandler.git

If you are using Cordova 7, you need to generate a package.json file for the plugin. You can use plugman for this, install it globally or in your project.

Example, creating a dummy project:

mkdir test-plugin-documenthandler
cd test-plugin-documenthandler/
npm init
git clone https://github.com/ti8m/DocumentHandler.git
npm install --save-dev plugman
cd DocumentHandler/
../node_modules/.bin/plugman createpackagejson .
cd ..
cordova create test-app
cd test-app/
cordova plugin add ../DocumentHandler

Finally you might not need plugman anymore so you could remove the dependency:
npm remove --save-dev plugman
