ZipWiz Elite Security & Privacy Implementation

Overview

This document describes the comprehensive security and privacy features implemented in ZipWiz, a file archive analysis application. The implementation follows industry best practices for security, privacy, accessibility, and auditability.

Architecture

Core Components

1. Audit Log Service (server/audit-log.ts)

Purpose: Provides immutable, append-only logging for all security-critical operations.

Key Features:

  • HMAC-SHA256 cryptographic signatures for tamper-proof logging
  • Multiple log levels: info, warning, critical
  • Categorized logging: access, security, privacy, authentication, authorization, export, scan, circuit_breaker, system
  • Query API with flexible filtering
  • Export to JSON and CSV formats
  • Statistics and reporting
  • HTTP middleware for automatic request logging

API:

// Log an event
await auditLog.log('critical', 'security', 'Unauthorized access attempt', {
  userId: 'user123',
  ipAddress: '192.168.1.1',
  details: { resource: 'sensitive-file.txt' },
});

// Query logs
const logs = await auditLog.query({
  startDate: new Date('2024-01-01'),
  level: 'critical',
  category: 'security',
});

// Export logs
const json = await auditLog.exportJSON(filters);
const csv = await auditLog.exportCSV(filters);

// Get statistics
const stats = await auditLog.getStatistics();

2. Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) (server/rbac.ts)

Purpose: Implements granular access control for files and archives.

Roles:

  • Reader: Can read and export files
  • Editor: Can read, write, export, and share files
  • Owner: Full control including permission management
  • Admin: System-level access

Permissions:

  • read: View file contents
  • write: Modify file contents
  • delete: Remove files
  • share: Share files with others
  • export: Export files/archives
  • modify_permissions: Grant/revoke roles
  • view_audit_logs: Access audit logs

API:

// Check permission
const result = await rbac.canAccess(fileId, 'file', userId, 'write', context);

// Grant role
await rbac.grantRole(fileId, targetUserId, 'editor', grantedBy);

// Log file operation
await rbac.logFileOperation('view', fileId, 'file', context);

// Create masked preview
const preview = rbac.createMaskedPreview(content, 500);

3. Multi-Channel Notification System (server/notifications.ts)

Purpose: Provides comprehensive notification capabilities across multiple channels.

Channels:

  • In-app notifications with real-time updates
  • Email notifications
  • Webhook/HTTP POST notifications
  • Slack integration
  • Browser push notifications

Features:

  • Priority-based notifications (low, medium, high, critical)
  • Automatic escalation for unacknowledged critical alerts
  • Snooze functionality with configurable duration
  • Acknowledgment tracking with audit logging
  • Event listeners for real-time UI updates
  • Statistics and reporting

API:

// Send notification
await notificationService.send(
  'critical',
  'security',
  'Security breach detected',
  'Unauthorized access from unknown IP',
  { ipAddress: '1.2.3.4' },
  userId
);

// Acknowledge notification
await notificationService.acknowledge(notificationId, userId);

// Snooze notification
await notificationService.snooze(notificationId, 60, userId);

// Configure channels
notificationService.configure({
  channels: ['in-app', 'email', 'slack'],
  slackWebhookUrl: 'https://hooks.slack.com/...',
  autoEscalateAfter: 15, // minutes
});

4. Plugin Registry System (server/plugin-registry.ts)

Purpose: Provides extensible plugin architecture for custom functionality.

Plugin Types:

  • scanner: Security vulnerability scanners
  • format-handler: Custom file format parsers
  • notification-channel: Additional notification channels
  • auth-provider: Authentication providers
  • policy-engine: Custom policy enforcement
  • validator: Data validators

Features:

  • Dynamic plugin registration and unregistration
  • Dependency management
  • Priority-based execution
  • Health checking
  • Automatic initialization and cleanup
  • Plugin statistics and monitoring

API:

// Register a scanner plugin
const plugin: ScannerPlugin = {
  metadata: {
    id: 'custom-scanner',
    name: 'Custom Security Scanner',
    version: '1.0.0',
    type: 'scanner',
    description: 'Scans for custom vulnerabilities',
    author: 'Security Team',
    enabled: true,
    priority: 10,
  },
  initialize: async () => {
    /* setup */
  },
  execute: async context => {
    /* scan logic */
  },
  scan: async files => {
    /* return scan results */
  },
};

await pluginRegistry.register(plugin);

// Execute all scanner plugins
const results = await pluginRegistry.executeAll('scanner', {
  files: uploadedFiles,
});

// Health check
const health = await pluginRegistry.healthCheck();
