Summary

  • Remote corpus: Replaces locally-bundled PDFs with four real documents fetched from deepcitation.com/demo on module load (YC SAFE, NVIDIA Form 144, Attention Is All You Need, Why LLMs Hallucinate). No corpus files to check in.
  • Attachment caching: Fetched PDFs are uploaded to DeepCitation once per cold start; attachment IDs can be pinned in env vars to skip re-uploading.
  • Rate limiting: In-process daily caps (global: 100 req/day, per-IP: 5 req/day) configurable via env vars; RATE_LIMIT_DISABLED=true turns them off. Returns 429 with user-friendly fork-to-remove message.
  • CitationDrawer: Chat messages now render citations with CitationDrawer in addition to inline CitationComponent.
  • Corpus route: /api/corpus/[filename] redirects to the source PDF URL (used by the download links in the sidebar).
  • Loading skeleton: Shimmer skeleton shown while the LLM answer streams in.
  • Error boundary on PopoverContent: Wraps PopoverContent in CitationErrorBoundary so hook lifecycle errors (e.g. ThemeProvider full-tree re-renders) are caught without permanently hiding the popover — key increments on open, not close, so a transient crash self-recovers on next open.
  • CitationErrorBoundary fix: Null fallback check changed from truthiness (if (fallback)) to !== undefined so an explicit fallback={null} correctly renders nothing instead of the default error indicator.
  • Docs: Removed internal monorepo path reference from README; updated example questions to match new corpus.

Test plan

  • cd examples/langchain-rag-chat && cp .env.example .env.local, fill in DEEPCITATION_API_KEY and OPENAI_API_KEY, run npm run dev
  • On cold start, server logs should show 4 PDF fetches + upload; IDs can be pasted into .env.local for subsequent runs
  • Ask one of the example questions — verify citation markers appear, popover opens, CitationDrawer opens
  • Send 6 questions from the same IP — 6th should return a 429 with the fork message
  • Set RATE_LIMIT_DISABLED=true and confirm the 6th request succeeds
  • Visit /api/corpus/yc-safe.pdf — should redirect to the source URL
  • Visit /api/corpus/nonexistent.pdf — should return 404 JSON

- Wrap PopoverContent in CitationErrorBoundary so hook lifecycle errors
  thrown during ThemeProvider-triggered re-renders are caught locally
  rather than propagating to the host app.
- Reset boundary on each open cycle via key={String(isHovering)} so a
  transient crash never permanently hides the popover.
- Fix CitationErrorBoundary.render: change truthy fallback check to
  !== undefined so fallback={null} is honoured.
- Improve componentDidCatch logging (message + stack separately).

- Replace 3 fictional local PDFs with 4 real remote PDFs (YC SAFE,
  NVDA Form 144, Attention Is All You Need, Why LLMs Hallucinate)
- Fetch PDFs from deepcitation.com/demo on cold start; cache attachmentId
  in env vars (DEEPCITATION_ATTACHMENT_*) to skip re-upload
- Eager module-load warmup uploads all sources before first request

Rate limiting:
- Add src/lib/rateLimit.ts: 5 req/day per IP + 20 req/day global bucket
- Return 429 with Retry-After and X-RateLimit-Remaining headers
- Add /api/corpus/ route to serve corpus PDFs for download

UI:
- Replace summary-badges row with CitationDrawer + CitationDrawerTrigger
- Replace loading status-line with animated LoadingSkeleton component
- Replace static corpus list with download links (corpus-link + download icon)
- Update sample questions to match new corpus topics

Docs:
- Fix JTD footer hiding: target > p:last-child instead of a[href*=...];
  hiding the link alone left orphaned text

Citation.tsx:
- Replace key={String(isHovering)} with an open-count ref that increments
  only on false→true transitions, preventing unnecessary PopoverContent
  unmount/remount on every popover close
- Fix indentation of PopoverContent JSX props (misaligned after boundary wrap)

page.tsx:
- Remove CORPUS_DOCS duplication; derive corpus list from CORPUS_SOURCES
  (single source of truth: corpus.ts)

rateLimit.ts:
- Make both daily caps configurable via env vars (RATE_LIMIT_MAX_PER_DAY,
  RATE_LIMIT_MAX_PER_IP_PER_DAY) with current values as defaults

.env.example / README:
- Document the two new rate limit env vars and the RATE_LIMIT_DISABLED flag
- Rewrite README to reflect remote corpus, cold-start warmup, attachment
  caching, rate limiting, and CitationDrawer UI

Either remove the attribute (let the browser decide) or have the route proxy the bytes with Content-Disposition: attachment instead of redirecting.

3. Retry-After value is inaccurate (route.ts line ~151)

When the app runs behind Vercel's edge network the leftmost x-forwarded-for value is client-controlled. An adversarial user can send x-forwarded-for: 1.2.3.4 to impersonate any IP and bypass the per-IP cap entirely. For a demo this is acceptable, but the README and code comment should note this explicitly so forks don't mistakenly treat it as a reliable security control. Vercel exposes a trusted x-real-ip header (or the request.ip field in newer Next.js edge middleware) that cannot be spoofed.

The change from if (fallback) → if (fallback !== undefined) is the right fix. fallback={null} is the correct way to suppress the default error indicator and was silently broken before.

7. Error boundary key-on-open pattern (Citation.tsx lines ~840–844)
Mutating a ref during render is valid in React (refs are not state), and the guard if (isHovering && !prevIsHoveringRef.current) makes this idempotent within a render cycle. The approach is sound, though a brief inline comment explaining why the key is only incremented on open (not on close) would help future maintainers — the JSDoc above already covers this but it's a few hundred lines away from the implementation.

8. endUserId is a static label, not a real user ID (rag.ts line ~618)

Fine for an example, but worth a comment clarifying this is an app-level label. Anyone forking this for a multi-user deployment should replace it with an actual per-user identifier.

The README shows RATE_LIMIT_DISABLED=true which is correct, but "1", "yes", or "TRUE" are silently ignored. The docs and .env.example are clear, so this is fine — just confirm the behavior is intentional.

What's well done

  • Eager warmup at module load with per-source promise caching is the right pattern for avoiding cold-start latency on the first request.
  • The fallback chain (getAttachment → re-upload) when deepTextPromptPortion is missing is a good defensive touch.
  • CitationDrawer integration in ChatMessage is clean and the useMemo usage for drawerItems and citationGroups is appropriate.
  • The corpus route returning 404 JSON for unknown filenames rather than silently redirecting is correct.
  • Rate limit state documentation ("intentionally lenient for a demo") sets accurate expectations.

The stale copy (#1) and download attribute bug (#2) should be fixed before merge. Items #3–#5 are worth addressing for correctness/security hardening.

The corpus links now redirect to remote URLs (cross-origin), where the
`download` attribute is silently ignored by browsers. Switch to an
external-link icon and open-in-tab behavior to match actual UX.
Also rename "Bundled corpus" section heading to "Corpus" now that PDFs
are fetched remotely.
