Reporting a Vulnerability

We take security vulnerabilities seriously. If you discover a security vulnerability, please follow these steps:

1. DO NOT create a public GitHub issue

Security vulnerabilities should be reported privately to prevent potential exploitation.

2. Report via Email

Send an email to: security@yourproject.com

Include the following information:

  • Description of the vulnerability
  • Steps to reproduce the issue
  • Potential impact assessment
  • Any suggested fixes or mitigations
  • Your contact information (optional, but helpful for follow-up)

3. Response Timeline

  • Initial Response: Within 48 hours
  • Status Update: Within 7 days
  • Resolution: Depends on severity and complexity

4. What to Expect

  • We will acknowledge receipt of your report
  • We will investigate the vulnerability
  • We will provide regular updates on our progress
  • We will coordinate the disclosure timeline with you
  • We will credit you in our security advisories (unless you prefer to remain anonymous)

Security Best Practices

For Contributors

  • Keep dependencies up to date
  • Follow secure coding practices
  • Use strong, unique passwords for all accounts
  • Enable two-factor authentication where possible
  • Never commit secrets, API keys, or sensitive data to the repository
  • Review code changes thoroughly before submitting pull requests

For Users

  • Always use the latest stable version
  • Keep your environment and dependencies updated
  • Use strong authentication methods
  • Follow the principle of least privilege
  • Regularly review and audit your configurations
  • Monitor for unusual activity

Security Measures

Code Security

  • Regular dependency vulnerability scanning
  • Automated security testing in CI/CD pipeline
  • Code review requirements for all changes
  • Static analysis tools integration
  • Secure coding guidelines enforcement

Infrastructure Security

  • Regular security updates and patches
  • Network security monitoring
  • Access control and authentication
  • Data encryption in transit and at rest
  • Regular security audits and assessments

Data Protection

  • Minimal data collection principle
  • Data encryption and secure storage
  • Regular data backup and recovery testing
  • Privacy-by-design implementation
  • Compliance with relevant data protection regulations

Vulnerability Disclosure Policy

Responsible Disclosure

We follow responsible disclosure practices:

  1. Discovery: Security researchers discover and report vulnerabilities privately
  2. Investigation: Our team investigates and validates the vulnerability
  3. Fix Development: We develop and test a fix
  4. Coordination: We coordinate with the reporter on disclosure timing
  5. Public Disclosure: We publicly disclose the vulnerability with appropriate details

Disclosure Timeline

  • Critical: 24-48 hours (immediate threat)
  • High: 7-14 days
  • Medium: 30 days
  • Low: 90 days

Credit and Recognition

We believe in recognizing security researchers who help improve our security:

  • Public acknowledgment in security advisories
  • Inclusion in our security hall of fame
  • Optional bug bounty rewards (where applicable)
