LunchLoxs

A privacy-first recipe manager with end-to-end encryption. Organize, scale, convert, and share recipes -- your data never leaves your devices unencrypted.

Built as an offline-first PWA with real-time collaboration, so you can cook from your phone even without signal, and edit together with family in real time.

Features

πŸ”’ Privacy & Security

  • πŸ”‘ End-to-end encrypted -- Proton Pass-style key hierarchy. The server never sees your recipes, titles, or ingredients in plaintext.
  • πŸ‘₯ Vault-based sharing -- Share recipe books with family or friends via ECDH key exchange. Each vault has its own encryption key with role-based access (owner/editor/viewer).
  • ✍️ Signed payloads -- Every sync message is ECDSA P-256 signed to prevent tampering.

πŸ“– Recipe Management

  • πŸ“š Organized in books -- Group recipes into books (e.g. "Weeknight Dinners", "Holiday Baking"). Drag to reorder.
  • πŸ“ Rich editing -- Markdown instructions with live preview, structured ingredient lists with inline editing, drag-to-reorder, and image support.
  • πŸ“¦ Import & export -- Markdown with YAML frontmatter. Bulk import/export as zip archives.
  • πŸ” Fuzzy search -- Fast fzf-style scoring across titles, tags, and book names. Optional vector search for semantic matching.

🍲 Cooking Tools

  • βš–οΈ Ingredient scaling -- Adjust servings with +/- buttons or quick double/halve. Handles fractions, ranges, and locked amounts.
  • πŸ”„ Unit conversion -- Click any unit to convert between metric and imperial. Grouped by system with live previews.
  • πŸ“ Density-based conversion -- Volume-to-weight conversion for 50+ common ingredients (flour, sugar, butter, etc.) sourced from King Arthur Baking and NIST standards.
  • βœ… Check-off ingredients -- Tap to strike through ingredients as you go.

⚑ Collaboration

  • πŸ” Real-time sync -- Automerge CRDTs over WebSocket. Multiple people can edit the same recipe simultaneously with no conflicts.
  • 🎯 Live cursors -- See where collaborators are editing in real time.
  • πŸ“Ά Offline-first -- Full service worker caching and IndexedDB storage. Works without network, syncs when reconnected.

🎨 Customization

  • πŸ–ŒοΈ 12 themes -- Dracula, Catppuccin (Latte/Frappe/Macchiato/Mocha), Nord, Tokyo Night, Everforest, Gruvbox, Dark, Light.
  • πŸ“± Installable PWA -- Add to home screen on any device. Feels native on mobile and desktop.

Development

Prerequisites

  • Bun (frontend build/dev)
  • Go 1.26+ (backend)
  • Podman or Docker (database, reverse proxy)

Local setup

# Start postgres, run migrations, and launch Traefik
podman compose up -d

# Backend (connects to local postgres)
cd backend
go run ./cmd/server

# Frontend (live rebuild)
cd frontend
bun install
bun run dev

Frontend: http://localhost:5000 | Backend: http://localhost:8000 | PgAdmin: http://localhost:5050

Docker/Podman compose (full stack)

podman compose up --build

Traefik handles TLS termination with a self-signed certificate on localhost.

Production deployment

Pull pre-built images from GHCR and run with your own domain and TLS certificate.

Same-origin (recommended)

Frontend and backend share one domain. Traefik routes /api and /ws to the backend.

# 1. Download the prod compose files
curl -LO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Nulifyer/LunchLoxs/main/docker-compose.prod.yml
curl -LO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Nulifyer/LunchLoxs/main/.env.example

# 2. Configure environment
cp .env.example .env
# Edit .env:
# FRONTEND_HOST=lunchloxs.example.com
# FRONTEND_HTTPS=true
# POSTGRES_PASSWORD=...

# 3. Add TLS certificate and Traefik config
mkdir -p certs traefik
cp /path/to/fullchain.pem certs/cert.pem
cp /path/to/privkey.pem certs/key.pem
curl -o traefik/dynamic.yml https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Nulifyer/LunchLoxs/main/traefik-dynamic.yml

# 4. Launch
docker compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml up -d

Cross-origin

Frontend and backend on separate domains (e.g. app.example.com + api.example.com).

cp .env.example .env
# Edit .env:
# FRONTEND_HOST=app.example.com
# FRONTEND_HTTPS=true
# BACKEND_HOST=api.example.com
# BACKEND_HTTPS=true
# POSTGRES_PASSWORD=...
docker compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml up -d

The frontend container constructs the backend URL from BACKEND_HOST + BACKEND_HTTPS at runtime and injects a <meta> tag into the HTML -- no rebuild needed. The backend constructs the frontend origin from FRONTEND_HOST + FRONTEND_HTTPS for CORS.

Security Model

Layer Mechanism
Authentication Argon2id (iterations=3, 19 MB) hash -- server never sees passphrase
Master key AES-256-GCM, wrapped with Argon2id-derived wrapping key. Full rotation on password change (re-encrypts all local data).
Vault keys AES-256-GCM, exchanged via ECDH P-256 + HKDF
Data at rest AES-256-GCM per document in IndexedDB
Data in transit AES-256-GCM encrypted payloads over WebSocket. Unverified payloads are rejected when signing keys are available.
Blob metadata Filenames and MIME types encrypted inside the blob body -- server sees only opaque bytes
Payload signing ECDSA P-256 on all sync messages
Key rotation Vault keys rotated on member removal. Master key rotated on password change.
Transport HTTPS enforced outside localhost. HSTS, CSP, X-Frame-Options, X-Content-Type-Options headers set by backend.
Timing attacks 2-second minimum auth time, constant-time compare
Rate limiting Configurable token bucket on WebSocket pushes
