Getting Started with Research Computing: From Command Line to Job Scheduling (an RC Short Course)

New to High Performance Computing? Jumping into a supercomputer like Alpine can feel overwhelming. This Short Course combines the essentials into one session to get you up and running fast.

We’ll start with the fundamentals of the Linux command line—how to navigate files and write basic scripts—and then dive into Alpine’s job scheduler. By the end of the session, you'll understand the cluster's hardware and have the confidence to schedule your own jobs.

Topics include:

  • Linux Basics: Common commands, filesystem navigation, and bash scripting.
  • Hardware: Understanding Alpine’s nodes and partitions.
  • Scheduling: How to submit batch scripts and launch interactive jobs.

In order to follow along with the hands-on component of this workshop, you’ll want to have a Research Computing Account prior to the start of the training. If you need assistance with this, please attend CRDDS consult hours in advance of the session.

What is an RC Short Course? A Short Course is a training that provides an in-depth understanding of a concept, system, or tool. You can expect to leave a "Short Course" with a solid grasp of the topic.
