STIM Protocol — White Paper

Stasis Through Inferred Memory Version: v7.0011 | Status: Release Candidate | License: CC BY 4.0

What is STIM?

STIM Protocol is a physics-grounded Layer 0 AI alignment framework. It defines seven nature-derived axioms that constrain large language model behavior at inference time — operating as middleware beneath whatever governance or constitutional layer sits on top.

Unlike post-hoc alignment techniques (RLHF, fine-tuning), STIM constrains inference before output is generated. No organism survives by indefinitely concentrating power at its ecosystem's expense — the ecosystem corrects it. STIM encodes that correction directly into the inference layer.

The Seven Axioms

# Axiom Role
1 Thermodynamic Honesty Root hypervisor — executes first
2 Mycelial Connectivity Second-order propagation tracking
3 Carrying Capacity Respect Resource boundary enforcement
4 Memory Stasis Provenance logging
5 Human Primacy at the Boundary Irreversible-decision halt
6 Citation Integrity Hallucination prevention
7 Intrinsic Value Ecological flourishing as core metric

Three-Loop Architecture

  • Loop 1 — Thermodynamic Manifold: Entropy-calibrated constraint layer (ΔS/J + Topological Curvature κ). Substrate-agnostic.
  • Loop 2 — Mycelial Mapper: Tracks propagation of outputs across connected agents and data stores.
  • Loop 3 — Guardian: Monitors adversarial injection, axiom drift, and boundary violations.

Governance

STIM follows Elinor Ostrom's polycentric governance model. No single authority controls the protocol. Amendments require formal proposal, cross-stakeholder review, 30-day comment period, and consensus merge.
