Thanks for the efforts. The to-json generates output in a format not compatible with trace2html that's why I didn't use earlier. Can you confirm if the trace.html gets generate correctly either going through to-json or via ctf2ctf path ?

Indeed the to-json output is not compatible sadly. However ctf2ctf seems to have removed the to-ctf param, so then no trace.html is generated at the end.

I'm thinking about converting the trace to a perf file and reading it with Speedscope.

Perf still have to-ctf option in latest kernel code. See https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/tools/perf/builtin-data.c
Just that it requires babel trace dev package to be installed else the final build of perf disables this option.
