Purpose

We created a set of user profiles to gain a better understanding of the requirements, objectives and challenges of individuals who will use Cato. By exploring these personas, we strive to make its capabilities compatible with a broad range of users.

Persona 1: Alex Johnson - Living with ALS

  • Name: Alex Johnson
  • Age: 53
  • Occupation: Freelance Artist
  • Condition: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
  • Mobility Level: Limited use of hands and arms, wheelchair user
  • Living Situation: Lives at home with spouse, with assistive healthcare
  • Technology Use: Uses Cato for computer navigation and digital art creation; Gesture+Mouse Mode, Remote Mode.
  • Goals/Needs: Continue creating art, stay connected socially using hands-free technology.
  • Challenges: Fatigue, limited mobility, needs easy-to-use and adaptable tech.

Persona 2: Bhavesh Patel - Spinal Cord Injury Survivor

  • Name: Bhavesh Patel
  • Age: 44
  • Occupation: Software Developer
  • Condition: Spinal Cord Injury (C5-C6 level)
  • Mobility Level: Full paralysis of lower body, partial paralysis of upper limbs
  • Living Situation: Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility
  • Technology Use: Cato in Pointer + Clicker Mode, Gesture+Mouse Mode.
  • Goals/Needs: Efficient, hands-free interaction with multiple screens and software, easy integration.
  • Challenges: Limited upper limb mobility, needs solutions for effective job performance without physical strain.

Persona 3: Carla Santos - Brain Stem Stroke Survivor

  • Name: Carla Santos
  • Age: 30
  • Occupation: Former Firefighter Trainee
  • Condition: Tetraplegic and non-verbal due to a brain stem stroke
  • Mobility Level: Complete paralysis
  • Living Situation: Congregate care facility
  • Technology Use: Relies on Cato’s Gesture+Mouse Mode for computer interaction, Remote Mode to control environment, Peri for communication.
  • Goals/Needs: Engage in social interactions, access digital content without human assistance.
  • Challenges: Complete paralysis, non-verbal, needs highly responsive tech for non-traditional input methods.

Persona 4: Diana Chen - Aging Independently

  • Name: Diana Chen
  • Age: 72
  • Occupation: Retired School Teacher
  • Condition: Mild arthritis, reduced fine motor skills, increased vision impairment
  • Mobility Level: Uses walker for steadiness
  • Living Situation: Lives independently in a senior community

  • Goals/Needs: Maintain independence, stay connected with family and friends, engage in online hobbies.

Persona 5: Erik Koval - Professional Gamer

  • Occupation: College Student and Aspiring Professional Gamer

  • Mobility Level: Completely mobile
  • Living Situation: Apartment with roommates near university
  • Technology Use: Interested in Cato for gaming, primarily Gesture+Mouse Mode.
  • Goals/Needs: Enhance gaming experience, seek innovative interactions for enjoyment and competitive advantage. Uses Cato for intuitive game navigation, customization for gaming, increased competitive advantages.
  • Challenges: Speed, responsiveness, accuracy, feedback, comfort, and battery life.
