Implement the no-64-byte-tx rule (CVE-2017-12842) from the Great Consensus Cleanup.

Forward ported from bitcoin#15482 (does not include anti-timewarp changes, or the script/sighash changes). Only rejects txs that serialize without the witness to exactly 64 bytes.

@ajtowns ajtowns added this to the 24.0 milestone Feb 20, 2023

Looks like a faithful port; including the lack of test for the case :P

e4be0e9 test: add -maxtipage test for the maximum allowable value (James O'Beirne)
a451e83 fix: validation: cast now() to seconds for maxtipage comparison (James O'Beirne)

Pull request description:

  Since bitcoin@faf4487, the maxtipage comparison in IsInitialBlockDownload() has been broken, since the NodeClock::now() time_point is in the system's native denomination (nanoseconds).

  Without this patch, specifying the maximum allowable -maxtipage (9223372036854775807) results in a SIGABRT crash:

  ```
  % gdb --args ./src/bitcoind -maxtipage=9223372036854775207 -minimumchainwork=0x00 -stopatheight=30000
is it important to run this check specifically before the merkle checks?
If you want to remove the call to CheckBlock prior to AcceptBlock in ProcessNewBlock then it's important to issue a BLOCK_MUTATED error for blocks with all 64-byte txs at a similar time to the merkle checks, as otherwise you'll get a real error which AcceptBlock will cache, preventing you from seeing the real block.
If you don't want to remove that call, then it matters a lot less where the 64b tx check is made.
As far as block.fChecked goes, seems to me it's more the reverse: you'd want ContextualBlockPreCheck() to set block.m_prechecked = true; and CheckBlock() to verify that's already been set?
IIUC there are two test cases that are missing
  1. Serializing a transaction with a witness that results in a 64 byte tx on the wire (but less than 64 bytes without the witness) should result in a valid block
  2. In the SizeSub64 test, if we add witness data we should still have an invalid block (i.e. confirm witness data cannot circumvent the check).
I'm working on a draft BIP rn, if no one gets to these before I finish that i can add. Likely in ~10 days.
Does anyone have thoughts on adding the 64-byte transaction check to CheckTransaction()? I've done that here: ajtowns@b47f910
This allows for static test vectors to be written for this consensus proposal (added in tx_invalid.json). This does bleed through to the p2p layer causing us to now disconnect peers more eagerly if they propagate a 64 byte transaction: ajtowns@3a57e3d
EDIT: Thinking about this more, it seems like this starts enforcing the consensus change before its signaled on the network so the change isn't helpful. Ig static test vectors will have to wait?
The 64-byte transaction check is executed in a new ContextualBlockPreCheck
which must be run before CheckBlock (at least in the final checking
before writing the block to disk). This function is a bit awkward but
is seemingly the simplest way to implement the new check, with the caveat
that, because the new function is called before CheckBlock, it can never
return a non-CorruptionPossible error state.
  ### Problem
  This is an alternative approach to bitcoin#34647, fixes bitcoin#34645.
  ### Fix
  First, add `CheckedSub` and use it for decrements of `m_dirty_count` and `cachedCoinsUsage`, so unsigned underflows turn into immediate failures instead of silently wrapping and only failing later.
  </details>
  The coins view fuzz targets can call `AddCoin`/`AddCoins` and construct `BatchWrite` cursors in ways that violate `CCoinsViewCache` caller contracts. These invalid states can trigger `BatchWrite` `std::logic_error` and can desync dirty-entry accounting (caught by `Assume(m_dirty_count == 0)` currently).
  Make the fuzzer avoid generating invalid states instead of catching and resetting:
  * Derive `AddCoin`’s `possible_overwrite` from `PeekCoin`, so `possible_overwrite=false` is only used when the outpoint is absent - similarly to https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/67c0d1798e6147f48d4bafc2c9e5ff30f2a62340/src/test/fuzz/coinscache_sim.cpp#L312-L317
  - Only use `AddCoins(check=false)` when we have confirmed the txid has no unspent outputs; otherwise fall back to `check=true` so `AddCoins` determines overwrites via the view.
  - When constructing a `CoinsViewCacheCursor`, avoid setting `FRESH` when the parent already has an unspent coin, and ensure `FRESH` implies `DIRTY`.
  ### Fuzzing
  The original error could be reproduced in ~10 minutes using `coins_view_overlay`. I ran the `coins_view`, `coins_view_db`, `coins_view_overlay`, and `coinscache_sim` fuzzers for this PR overnight and they didn't fail anymore.
  The output will be:
  ```
  Running with -sanity-check option, output is being suppressed as benchmark results will be useless.

  SUMMARY: ThreadSanitizer: data race on vptr (ctor/dtor vs virtual call) /ci_container_base/src/index/base.cpp:99:1 in BaseIndex::~BaseIndex()
  ==================
  ```
  Fix this by following the shutdown sequence of first stopping the index and then desctructing it, instead of doing both at the same time (stopping inside the desctructor).
  Also, apply the comment `// Shutdown sequence (c.f. Shutdown() in init.cpp)` consistently, while touching this topic of the codebase.
  Also, remove the unused `SyncWithValidationInterfaceQueue`, which is redundant to the prior `BlockUntilSyncedToCurrentChain`. See also the last comment in the pull request that introduced this: bitcoin#26188 (comment)
  > I think anything is fine here. Either keep both or delete both.
  Given that devs did not apply the redundant sync in two new cases, it seems fine to remove it.
