FAQs
Please ensure that you have closely followed the instructions for preparing AMV Tracker to be able to download videos from YouTube -- this involves manually downloading both yt-dlp and ffmpeg. The specific instructions for how to do this can be found here, here, or within AMV Tracker itself, on the "Data import" tab in Settings.
I used to be able to download videos from YouTube, but now it doesn't work consistently or at all, or I no longer have the range of audio/video format options I once had!
You likely have an outdated version of yt-dlp. YouTube is constantly updating their API, and over time they change the way that downloaders such as yt-dlp have to work in order to be able to download videos. As such, if you ever start having issues with AMV Tracker's YouTube download function, it can likely be fixed by updating yt-dlp. This is as simple as going to AMV Tracker's Settings to locate the path to the yt-dlp.exe executable, and then going to the yt-dlp Releases page, downloading the most up-to-date .exe file (you do not need any of the other listed assets), and placing it in the directory where the current yt-dlp.exe file exists (thus overwriting it). Please DO NOT raise an issue here regarding problems with downloading YouTube videos if you do not have the most up-to-date version of yt-dlp.
Please ensure that you have downloaded both ffmpeg.exe and ffprobe.exe, and located them within AMV Tracker's Settings. This function cannot work without both files. Please read the instructions for how to do this here (under the "Additional steps" section) or in the "Data import" tab in AMV Tracker's Settings.
Unfortunately, I have no idea why this happens, and have no way to analyze it without some sort of error message, but I have experienced this plenty of times over the years. I've noticed that it tends to happen if I leave AMV Tracker open for a long time (days or weeks) and then try to take some action. It is probably good practice to close out of the program when you know you won't be using it for a while. Otherwise, if/when you experience this, you can rest assured that nothing bad has happened to the program or to your data -- in the dozens (maybe hundreds) of times that this has happened to me over the last many years of using AMV Tracker, I have never once experienced any kind of data loss or damage. Just restart the program and keep going.
