This app uses Ruby on Rails, The Movie Database API, and themoviedb-api gem to help you find info on the shows you love and dicover new ones you will want to watch!
This app is an easy and clean way to navigate through The Movie Database API's library of television shows. The front page will always have a lits of top 20 most popular shows and updates daily.
You can use the handy search bar to look up any title you may be curious about and find more information.
You can fork and clone this repository to your own machine, but for it to work properly you will need to create an API key for TMDB and place that key in config/credentials.yml.enc as tmdb_api_key which is called for in config/initializers/tmdb_config.rb. Check out this medium post if you're not familiar with how credentials.yml.enc works.
I chose Ruby on Rails because I like the way it handles interactions with large databases like TMDB. There is a very user friendly gem, themoviedb-api gem, to interact with The Movie Database which also made Rails an appealing choice. I belive this gem, especially its search funtion, allowed me to create far more of the website than I would have otherwise.
For hosting I am most familiear with Heroku, and with the limited time vailable I was confident I would be able to make this app work on Heroku in time. I switched from SQLite3 to PostgreSQL becuase Heroku seems to prefer it.
I've used Materialize for my css design library becuase I was familiar with it, and I knew it had Autocomplete functionality in it, through I did not have time to get that going properly.
If I had more time I would have liked to have fixed the formatting issues in the search results, as well as creating proper pagination for the search results. I also would have liked to included cast memebers and links to profiles for them, but think that could have been another good chunk of time to do that properly.
