I just had a look at this changeset and thought it maybe should be done a bit differently.
While it answers / documents the question you had about symlinks, there are a lot of other special kinds of files where people might have questions about (like whether it deals with hardlinks, fifos, sockets, block/char devices, .....).

It might get a bit much if that all is put there. So maybe it should rather go somewhere else in the docs.
