This also updates the tarball packaging to work between git hashes and official releases.
This seems to be about as new as possible without breaking Nerves systems that use Linux 6.1.
This also removes support for downloading tarball distributions and instead always goes to git. The source distributions have been bootstrapped already and if you forget to bootstrap them again, then patches won't be applied. This had been helpful in ignoring patches that were no longer needed, but very frustrating for patches that were needed.
Also remove code that was never used that was confusing when tracking this down.
