The macro feels like it's getting a bit unwieldy because of the combinations it has to account for... But anyway, not for this PR. Thanks!

Yeah, it's an eternal struggle whether to implement steps using macros or manually. Normally I wasn't too big of a fan of the macros, but the simple pragmatic truth is that if we consolidate as much stuff as possible into macros (assuming there are not a lof of one-off hacks and special cases), it makes refactoring and experimentation in bootstrap much simpler, because there's a much smaller number of places that you need to modify. So for now, as we plan to do a lot of refactoring, I think it's a net win. |

Small cleanup to reduce the number of places that require custom check steps. Of course I had to include one mini hack because of Rust Analyzer.. but I think it's worth it here.
