This is designed to merged after #162, as it deprecates a function that should be no longer necessary on newer Rust versions.
This is a backwards incompatible change. VecLike was deprecated in 0.6.0 released 2 years ago, and that should have given plenty of time to remove its usages.
Requires Rust 1.28.0.

This rebases #164, #165 and #166, and addresses my review comments in the first (removing the function given there's an stable alternative in our new minimum required rust version).
