Spec Templates

Structured product specification templates designed to help you define what you're building before you build it. By Unlearn.

Templates

Simple (spec_simple_template.md)

A lightweight spec covering the essentials: overview, goals, user roles, core features, and tech stack. Good for smaller projects or when you want to move fast without skipping the fundamentals.

Advanced (spec_advanced_template.md)

A comprehensive spec that adds user stories, user flows, notifications, error states, constraints, assumptions, open questions, dependencies, security considerations, and success metrics. Better suited for larger projects or when multiple people need to stay aligned.

How to use these

Each template includes inline comments explaining what to write in every section. There are three ways to use them:

  1. Write the spec yourself — Fill in the template manually, then hand it to AI or your team as a clear brief to build from.
  2. Give it to AI to fill in — Share the template along with your product idea and let AI generate a structured spec you can review and refine.
  3. Restructure an existing spec — Have a spec already? Use the template to reorganise it into a consistent format that's easier to follow and build from.

Which template should I pick?

Start with Simple if you're building something straightforward or just want to get the core ideas down. Use Advanced when the project has more moving parts, more stakeholders, or more risk of things being missed.

You can always start simple and expand into the advanced format later.
