Channel assignment
Multi-Radio Multi-Channel IEEE 802.11-based Wireless Mesh Networks have recently emerged as an effective and inexpensive way to provide increased coverage to Broadband Wireless Access networks apart from extending access to existing wired networks. Utilizing multiple channels has the potential to scale up the system capacity of wireless access networks if accompanied with delicately designed channel assignment algorithms. In this work, we discuss a distributed hybrid channel assignment scheme, ITACA, which assigns channels intelligently to mesh radios, with the aim of reducing the interference and improving the overall network throughput. The channel assignment algorithm and protocol are implemented in the NS-2 simulator and evaluations show fair performance improvement compared to other dynamic channel assignment protocols and very significant performance gains compared to static assignment of channels.
