Without this field, corepack falls back to the Node-bundled npm (10.x) which doesn't support OIDC token exchange (requires npm >= 11.5.1).
`corepack enable` without arguments skips npm (since npm is bundled with Node.js), so the `npm` command kept resolving to the bundled v10.9.7 which doesn't support OIDC trusted publishing, causing `npm publish` to 404 on auth.
