As mentioned in the description, in the interest of velocity of iteration, I'd like to investigate how to fix this in a follow-up, so work can be parallelized. Landing this PR is a blocker for the next step ("Add panel layout option so that whether to always show the edit icon or not is configurable, see #73036 (comment))"). And QuickEdit is still an experiment, which provides us some cover for iteration. |

Aside from making the entire row a interactive to increase the target size for mouse users (and address the empty-value issue), the idea here was to make the pencil an icon button in order to provide an accessible dedicated trigger with a clear label. The row being interactive was kind of a mouse-user-only feature. I made a prototype here a while ago to demonstrate. Do you think that's feasible, or not the right approach? Edit to clarify: For users of assistive tech the pencil is not perceived. A button is announced but the label doesn't clarify what the button does. A dedicated 'Edit' button addresses this. |

That's great feedback, I missed that part. Pushed some changes at 5fc42af that should make it work like you suggested (click target is the button, that stretches to the container for mouse target). |

Some things I noticed: Focus: In case there were bigger labels: Screen.Recording.2026-02-09.at.12.03.05.PM.movIt feels like the rows would need some padding, probably in conjunction with reducing the quick edit form's padding, but that wouldn't work well since we mix layouts with some fields.. Not sure if there is any css technique to achieve that gracefully. Also the |

Though I wasn't able to replicate the row height dancing in your video, it remains the same height for me: Screen.Recording.2026-02-09.at.13.08.51.movAn alternative to allow field labels grow would be to hide the remaining content behind an ellipsis. Though I'd think the field labels, by being field names, are contained in size most of the time. The few cases that would not (for example, when localized to languages such as German), would benefit from reading the whole word instead of cutting off a few characters. But I'm not opinionated and could implement the ellipsis if that's what folks think is best. |

How aria-disabled is useful here on a generic div?

I get why you did, but it seems we can avoid this aria-disabled (as it doesn't make sense in a generic div) and just append an is-disabled classname to that div and update the css selectors to check that class.

In addition to styles, we also want to communicate behavior to assistive technologies, which the is-disabled class would not communicate.

So, it seem my initial button question is related to this code.
I don't think anything is announced in screen readers here since the div is not focusable (there is not tabindex).
So if we want the button to to communicate behavior to assistive technologies we should probably always render it disabled, but accessible when disabled.
If rendering the button is messing with the styles we should look into the tabindex for the div, no?

We could probably tidy this a bit.
We already pass labelPosition and with these changes showError and errorMessage.
With the above we can calculate labelContent, labelClassName directly in SummaryButton and avoid the prop drilling.
Additionally aria-haspopup seems to be the same for both and we could add it directly in the markup.

I've done some heavy tidy-up for the panel, modal, dropdown, and summary components.

Re focus, we probably don't need tab stops for the row and the edit button since they're effectively the same thing. What do you think? I think we might want to tweak the styling a bit to adjust padding/spacing. Happy to push some changes there later before merging. |

@ntsekouras I fixed the layout shits. @jameskoster I'm not pushing anything else today here, so feel free to submit the changes you want to see. There's an issue I need to look at: the dropdown does not return focus to the opening trigger button (the same happens in trunk). As a result, when closing the dropdown via ESC button, the focus does not return to the modal (and ESC again does not close it). Screen.Recording.2026-02-09.at.17.25.01.mov |

What?
This PR updates the panel trigger so that the whole field is clickable, as opposed to only the field content.
Why?
There's an issue with empty content right now: because the content is empty, the trigger is very small. New designs change the trigger to the whole field.
